GRWM: Bouncy Curls and Light/Bright Makeup

Helloo, so this past weekend I celebrated m aunt’s 50th and one of my friend’s 21st birthdays. There was plenty of alcohol and FOOD (diet was momentarily on pause). So anyway, I really liked my hair/makeup that I wore to my friend’s 21st birthday party so I thought I’d show you and do a little run through of what I used etc 🙂

bouncy curls hairstyle

Here it is! So I went for kinda of voluminous curls and light shades around my eyes with winged eyeliner (it’s my fave!)

So I used my Babyliss Pro (type F40b) Curling Wand CLICK HERE (it looks like it’s on sale at the moment too so would be a good time to buy!). Not going to lie, this is the only curling wand I own, I’m a student so I can’t afford everything I’d like but I think it’s a pretty good one. When I first used it (yeearss ago) back when the curling wand trend was just starting and I had been used to the ones you clip your hair into and roll up, I wasn’t such a big fan of it. Now, having used it for years and also having had a bad experience with the old kind of curlers, I love it!

So I sprayed my hair with a bit of Tresemme Protect Heat Defence Styling Spray and began to curl AWAY from my face. My tip is to always curl away from your face, I think it looks miles better and frames your face better. I generally take quite large chunks of hair when I’m curling it this way, that’s how to get the larger ringlets when you’re done. I don’t really measure the amount of hair I take but I’d say only about ten pieces overall (obviously this varies from hair type to hair type).

The piece of hair right at the front on my right side (the side my parting sweeps to) I take a smaller section and curl it backwards on the top of my head and hold it for a few seconds only. I wrap my hair around the wand right to the top but it falls slightly to where it’s sitting in the picture. Afterwards just a spritz of hairspray and I tend to run my hands through it to make it less organised as well!

I decided, because it was a summer evening and I was wearing a long maxi skirt, to go for a bright kind of dewy makeup look. I started by applying my NARS sheer glow foundation in Mont Blanc (of course) (CLICK HERE) and blended it out. I love the coverage this foundation gives me without looking cakey, it’s for sure a holy grail item for me! I then applied some of my Collection Lasting Perfection concealer (CLICK HERE) under my eyes and on a few spots I’ve had on my forehead recently (sigh). I then applied a light dusting of my Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in Translucent (CLICK HERE) I’m sure you’ve  all heard loads about this powder before but it’s great and I don’t see a reason to pay out for a high end brand when this powder does the job just fine for me 🙂

On my eyes I decided to get out my old MAC palette. I used Charcoal Brown in my crease just to give it a little bit of definition without it being a dramatic look at all, and then I applied Naked Lunch across my lid. I used a little bit of Nylon in my inner corners (it’s quite an intense shimmer so I was light handed with it). For me I really wanted to use light shades, and I’ve been loving doing that recently because I find that it opens up my eyes and enhances them better than when I apply heavy, dark shades. I then applied a thin line of liquid eyeliner on my lid as I love the elongating effect of a wing on me! Here’s a picture that better shows my eye makeup (even if it is a bit cringe).

Winged eyeliner natural makeup

Obviously it’s not perfect, I’m not a pro or anything, but I quite liked the final result. On my eyebrows I filled them in with MAC Omega eyeshadow first and then used a little bit of my Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in Taupe (CLICK HERE) to sharpen up the ends.

I bronzed my face a tiny bit (not that you can see it!) with NARS Laguna Bronzer (CLICK HERE), another product I absolutely LOVE from Nars and then used my Sleek Solstice Highlighting palette which I’ve spoken about quite a few times on this blog now! In the above picture I hadn’t applied anything to my lips yet, but i did decide to go for MAC Velvet Teddy, which I think is meant to be a kind of browny nude but because I’m so pale it comes up quite dark on me!

Here’s another picture of the final look (feat a glorious glass of prosecco).

I hope you enjoyed reading this and maybe found it interesting if you’re looking for hair/makeup inspiration for something this summer 🙂 I felt pretty confident with this look and it didn’t feel like too much or too little.

Job Interview Makeup

So today I’m bored at work, currently sat in the mailroom waiting for about a MILLION things to print off. So I thought I’d do a work themed post. I was recently at a couple of job interviews trying to find a summer placement, so I thought I’d just quickly explain what I put on my face those days 🙂

job interview makeup
So this is what it looked like. It was pretty subtle because, after all, it was an interview.

I started with my FAVOURITE foundation Nars Sheer Glow and applied that to my face, followed by a touch of Rommel Wake Me Up concealer under my eyes and on a couple of blemishes. After that I set everything in place with my Rommel Stay Matte powder in translucent.
I used Mac Omega eyeshadow on my eyebrows (it’s a matte and a very good shade for my brows) followed by some of my Anastasia Pomade in Taupe just on the ends for some definition. Getting the brows right is always going to be a work in progress though!

On my eyes I used Woodwinked by Mac and blended it out. I genuinely think this eyeshadow can look gorgeous by itself as when you blend it out it goes a smoky orange toned shade. A thin line of my Bourjois Pinceau liner across my lid but no wing (I’ll be honest I just didn’t have time!) and then a lick of Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara (but not too much as it can get quite dramatic!).

I kept it very simple on my face and applied the lightest little bit of hoola bronzer just to define my face a touch and then I used my Mac Soft and Gentle Mineralize Skin Finish, it’s the perfect amount of subtle while still being a gorgeous highlight!

On my lips I used my trusty Mac Velvet Teddy lipstick, no liner for a more natural look. It always does the trick!

So there you go that’s just a quick run down of what I wore to my job interviews! Hope you like it 🙂

Oh and here are some other pictures of it that I found, slightly less flattering!

Until next time,

spring cosmetics haul

Spring Cosmetics Haul!

I haven’t done a post like this in a while so I thought I’d share with you some of the things I’ve bought recently! 🙂

spring cosmetics haul

So as you can see I’ve bought a few things, some more expensive than others. I don’t know about your but Spring seems to be the time when I restock everything I’ve run out of and buy a few new things for my wardrobe. It feels like the start of the year more than January to me in many ways.

I’ll start by showing you what eyebrow products I bought recently. Now I am the kind of person who is literally NEVER happy with their eyebrows. I have tried so many different products over the years and I’ll go through phases of using different things and then looking back and thinking “what the fuck was I doing” at some point. Anyway at the moment I’m using the following (check my little attempt at a gif too):

benefit brows zoeva anastasia pomade

Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade in Taupe, Benefit Gimme Brow in Light, Benefit Ready Set Brow Clear Brow Gel and Zoeva 317 Rose Gold Vol 2.

I’ve wanted to try an Anastasia brow product for so long. It was only recently I heard about the Pomade and after a short period of contemplation I gave in to the temptation and ordered one! For me the colour range was pretty poor. There’s a good mix of warm and cool tones but the actually shade range is pretty limited. Taupe is the lightest cool toned shade and I sometimes find it a bit dark on me. In fairness I am very fair and have light hair but for me this is a slight drawback. The actual product is very good though, easy to apply with precision and glides on nicely. You only need to use the tiiiniest little bit too so hopefully this product will last me a long time!

I never thing of Benefit as being one of my favourite brands but actually when I think about it they have a lot of good products that I use every day. I recently ran out of my MAC clear (not by the end it wasn’t) brow gel and needed a replacement because my brows are unruly at the best of times. I’m really glad I went for the Ready Set Brow gel because it really does set them in place and they don’t move!

As I said above I’m in a constant battle with my eyebrows and I’ve heard SO MANY good things about Benefit Gimme Brow. A few years ago I was in Boots in my hometown and you know how sometimes the people at makeup counters can be… pushy? My friend and I were literally just stood looking at the benefit stand (minding our own business) and the lady at the counter came over, whipped out her Benefit Gimme Brow and practically forcibly applied it to our eyebrows! Despite this interesting experience I actually thought the product looked pretty good. I think I’ll do a post soon on my eyebrow routine because there are quite a few steps 🙂

zoeva brushes collection lasting perfection concealer

The Zoeva (i’m sure i’m not the only one but when I first heard about this brand years ago I thought it was a Zoella brand!) brushes are great, very soft on the skin and apply product nicely and evenly. Also aren’t they just completely bloody gorgeous?! Rose gold is such an amazing trend!

The Collection Lasting Perfection concealer was a repurchase. I mean of course it was it’s the best concealer everrr. Mine is in the lightest shade and I can’t live without it. The only negative about it is sometimes I find the consistency a little thick, but I think that’s probably just a matter of opinion more than actually a shortcoming of the product.

hourglass ambient lighting, sleek solstice highlighting palette, bourjois liquid eyeliner

I’ve already raved about the Sleek Solstice Highlight palette in a recent post (if you haven’t seen it click HERE). So I won’t go into too much detail about it other than it is just absolutely gorgeous. If you’re a girl who loves an intense highlight like me (let’s be real who doesn’t) then I assure you you will love this palette!

The Bourjois Pinceau liner is also a repurchase. I used to struggle so much with eyeliner but once I found this product i can now do winged eyeliner in about 2 minutes, which I couldn’t have dreamed of doing before! Can’t see myself using a different eyeliner any time soon!

I recently bought this Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Diffused Heat for £10 on Depop. It originally costs £32 and for a second hand product that’s basically unused I think paying less than a third of the price is a pretty amazing bargain! I’d highly recommend Depop (and hey if you want to follow me find me @jbowey96). I’ve wanted to try Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Blushes for absolutely ages but they are just so extortionate. Having tried one now i can tell you that the colour is gorgeous, be quite light handed with the application because they are very pigmented but the effect on the skin is STUNNING!

Finally I was in town recently and escaped from a freak downpour of rain into the nearby Lush shop. Surprise surprise I didn’t come away empty handed. I actually bought 2 items but the one I feel like deserves a special mention is the No Drought Dry Shampoo. It works super well and you get plenty product for your money. I find with a lot of spray on dry shampoos the product will run out after a very short amount of time and you’ll just be left with a strange liquid coming out of it that just makes your hair look WORSE! The best thing about this product though has to be the smell. It smells of lemons and it’s so zingy and lovely, the perfect smell for a dry shampoo that’s meant to make you seem fresher than you probably are!

Well that’s everything I’ve bought recently I hope you enjoyed reading 🙂

5 Reasons your Period is a Bully

You may have guessed from the title that this post isn’t particularly one for the boys. After a week that has been, for lack of a better word, testing I have a bit of a bone to pick with periods. Obviously this is all a bit tongue in cheek but here we go: 5 reasons your period is basically a total bully!

  1. It’s always there

You’re finally shot of the last hint of blood and ready to get your life back to normal. If you’re lucky you’ll have a couple weeks of freedom before the PMS starts creeping back in again! Kinda reminiscent of a bully who seems to pop up pretty much every day on the walk home from school. Obviously having a bully come after you is far more terrifying than having your period, after all you know your period is natural and, for most people, ultimately harmless but still there’s a real similarity there!

  1. It causes you pain

A bully might physically punch you, but your period targets you from the inside. Whether it’s sharp, knife like pains or dull cramps, when you’re on your period the pain is absolutely constant! For me personally, and having spoken to other girls I know I’m not the only one, bad period pains are riiiight at the top of my pain tolerance. I can’t imagine being able to cope with something more than that (*cough* childbirth).

  1. It messes with your head

Bullies tease you, mock you, insult you and turn other people against you. This aspect of bullying is in no way comparable to the way a period makes you feel. Some of the feelings you may feel as a result of these things, however, can also happen as a result of PMS. Frustration and feeling an urge to lash out at your loved ones, randomly bursting into tears and feeling weary, general exhaustion. You name it.

  1. It’s all encompassing

I don’t know about you but when I’m on my period it’s pretty much all I can think about. I remember, back in the day when I was about 12 or 13 I experienced bullying myself. It is truly horrible and it does take over your life. I would dread coming into school to the point where I became quite ill and when I’d come home it would be all I could think about then too. So having your period is obviously not as intense as this but you’re sure as hell still thinking about it all the time when it happens. Just more in an irritated “I could really do without this” way rather than being in actual fear.

  1. It ruins your self-image

There is NOTHING sexy about being on your period. You’re bloated, retaining fluid, your skin breaks out and that’s before we even consider the fact that you’ll be bleeding for a whole week. It’s not pretty. I’m sure even somebody with the best confidence probably isn’t feeling their best when they’re in the lead up to/on their period.

So my advice for when you’re on your period and just really can’t be bothered is to curl up somewhere nice and warm with a hot cup of tea or hot chocolate and something good to watch on TV (or more likely your laptop).

My advice if you’re being bullied is to confide in people you trust, tell an authority figure and if you don’t feel you can safely do that contact a local hotline for more professional advice than I can provide. But absolutely do not do NOTHING.

Until next time,

J x

Side note: Header image is an Instagram post by Rupi Kaur (@RupiKaur_) that Instagram later removed deeming it “inappropriate”, as if periods aren’t bad enough without society’s two cents.

My Dilemma about the 2017 General Election

As voting day is pretty much upon us now I thought I’d write a little post about my dilemma/frustration about this particular election.

Firstly, I’d like to quickly mention that the featured image for this post (also below) was conceived and expertly drawn by a friend from my hometown – Calum A.B. McMillan. He’s been drawing for years and I particularly like this political piece. I know some very talented people 🙂

For me this election has been the one with the most urgency and also the one that (from my experience) my generation has been the most involved in yet. Everywhere I turn people are being urged to vote and take part in political discussions (which is great!) and I’ve personally done more research in the run up to this election than any other.

There is one thing, however, that greatly disheartens me and leads me to believe that all of this research and discussion will ultimately be useless. In my opinion, and particularly in the past few years, there is no point in voting for anyone other than the SNP in Scotland. Every other party is so dramatically behind the SNP in all of the polls and also in previous elections. If you’re passionate about Labour regaining power or the policies of the Liberal Democrats you have to make the decision between voting for the party whose policies you’re passionate about and, therefore, essentially wasting your vote or going with the masses and voting SNP.

Now don’t get me wrong, I actually agree with the majority of the SNP’s policies. I read most of them through the other day. I particularly agree with their proposition to halt UK arms exports to Saudi Arabia immediately, BUT I think that their rhetoric is often preoccupied with referendum talks. I would, personally, be far more impressed with them if they focused on politics first and foremost whilst making plans for a second independence referendum on the back burner.

By voting SNP Scottish people are clearly expressing their wish to have people who are primarily concerned with Scottish issues in the House of Commons. I don’t disagree with that, but it does remove a massive chunk of what used to be, majoritively, a Labour stronghold (worth noting that SNP oppositions do seem to be changing a little). What does this do? It increases the likelihood of the Conservatives achieving a majority. We have had a Conservative government for roughly seven years now and, personally, I look forward to the day they fall from power. Unfortunately, despite the abomination that has been Theresa May’s campaign, that doesn’t look to be any time soon and I feel relatively powerless to stop it.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here because I think it should be mentioned, the massive success of the SNP in Scotland does also block the Conservatives from gaining many seats in Scotland, so in that interpretation it makes the possibility of the Tories winning a majority a bit less likely.

To be honest, I’m confused, and it has taken me a long while to decide who I want to vote for. My main point is that in Scotland it is relatively certain that the SNP will win most seats. My advice to anyone in England who wants to see the Tories out is to put their personal views with regards to which specific progressive party they prefer to one side and vote for the Tories’ main, progressive opposition. Blocking them from seats is the only way to deny them a majority. Basically, everyone needs to USE THEIR VOTE!

This was more thoughtful than usual and I’m aware that this post could open me up to some criticism. So I’ll end by saying I completely respect everyone’s individual views, these are just my own. I’m not in any way trying to tell anybody who to vote for. Just stating what will probably be the most effective choice for those who are similarly minded to me!

Also if any of my politics is like straight up incorrect please let me know as I’m no expert but trying to learn!

Until next time,

Life Update – New Flat, Diet and Summer Work

As you can tell from the title there’s fun times to be had all round here.

Uni is officially finished and as relieved as I am about that (here’s hoping I passed everything) you know the old saying, when one door closes another door opens. Except in this case it’s less “get’s rejected for a job but then finds dream job” and more “last exam is over okay now time for a few months of unrewarding work because you need the money”… “oh and it’s also time to go on a diet”.

So today was my first day at my new temporary job and, to be fair, it was actually a lot better than expected. I worked a few jobs last summer that I absolutely hated: one involved standing beside the reception desk from 9-5 every day and not being allowed to sit down or even do anything like answer the phones and another involved straightening clothes on a rack for 9 hours a day in a cold tent. So getting to sit at a desk in a large atrium and answer a variety of queries (as mundane as it may sound) is actually a vast improvement!

I have also undertaken what is possibly my biggest shift in lifestyle EVER this past few weeks. I’ve gone from eating the worst I’ve ever eaten to probably almost the best. Instead of pizzas multiple times a week I’m not having salad for lunch every day and a low calorie dinner with a LOT more exercise in between. Here’s a small sample of my new menu, not exactly instagram worthy, but maybe wordpress worthy.

healthy snack, apricots

That, my friends, is a snack I had one evening. It’s brown toast with DIABETIC JAM (i’m not diabetic, just trying to cut out sugar) and 3 apricots. Sorry for picture quality this picture was taken in the evening with only my dull lamp as lighting.

I’m really curious about what everyone else is up to this summer? Perhaps it’s a bigger change for me than most because I’m living on the academic year rather than the calendar year at the moment, so summer is really my transition time. I’m not going to keep this diet up forever, but I do want to take elements of it with me when I move back to Glasgow in September.

Speaking of which my cousin and I have secured a new flat for next year! It’s SO much nicer than the one we’re in now (aka not infested with mice) and has a large kitchen which will allow us to cook more! Here are some pictures in a snazzy little slide show:

Despite not having as many friends, bars and cafes around (and not to mention less free time) being back in Inverness does have some good points. It’s bloody lovely here and I think sometimes I forget that. There’s a lot to be said for being able to walk just about anywhere and have stunning scenery all around!

inverness sunset, scotland sunset

I know this post wasn’t about anything much but I just thought I’d write a little something to signify the start of the summer 🙂

What are your plans this summer?

Until next time,
